Whether you are seeking good quality general stock, or need to make contact with a specialist, the West Country will almost certainly meet your demands.

It is re-assuring to know that many dealers in the West Country are members of a local or national Antique Dealers Association who must meet and abide by a 'Code of Practice'.

Two national antique dealer associations in Great Britain are LAPADA The Association of Art and Antique Dealers and BADA The British Antique Dealers Association.

Many other local associations also exist, for example BABAADA The Bath & Bradford on Avon Antique Dealers Association who are central to the West Country with a membership of over 50 reputable general and specialist dealers, whilst CADA The Cotswolds Art and Antique Dealers Association have been established for more than 25 years and whose aims are to promote its members, all of whom offer a high standard of goods and services. There are also many other specialist national bodies, for example ABA The Antiquarian Booksellers Association and BHI The British Horological Institute are just a few further examples.

Dealers who are members of such organisations usually promote the fact quite clearly, either in their advertising or by signs in their premises. Others however remain independent, relying on their reputation of having been in the antiques trade for many, many years, which in some cases family businesses have existed for decades, thereby adding to their repute.

The majority of antique dealers in the West Country and Great Britain for that matter, offer good opening hours, but always check with each individual business that you would like to visit as times can vary. Many also offer limited Sunday opening or other times by appointment, Most also accept that foreign buyers are often working to a tight schedule and time is most definitely of the essence and will be pleased to offer flexible viewing times whenever possible. Please always check all the options available, particularly if you have some distance to travel.
