Bath Decorative and Antiques Fair 2008
The 19th Annual Bath Decorative and Antiques Fair continued to surprise and delight when the doors opened at mid-day on Thursday 6th March 2008 for Trade opening.

The queue had begun well before 10.00am and when the doors finally opened the line of prospective buyers had wound around the building and up to the main road. The Fair has held a unique and well regarded position in the national antiques fairs calendar and in spite of the friendly and informal laid back atmosphere, it is known internationally for its commercial success and the standard of rare and unusual items on sale from well known and respected dealers from across the UK including 18 members exhibiting from the West of England Antiques Dealer Association (WEADA).

The US trade was very well represented together with UK trade, not only London but from the North also. Business was brisk as shippers waited outside the building to load items with destination tags for Maine, California, Georgia and Texas, USA.

A long list of visiting dealers hoping to exhibit next year left their details with the organiser Robin Coleman. Robin was very pleased with the attendance this year, and in particular noticed an increase in public footfall from the WEADA region. Compressing the Fair into a 3-day event had been the right decision he said.

The Fair also played host to the launch of the new WEADA Guide and web site at the official opening ceremony on Thursday evening after the Trade Opening Day. Chairman Patrick Macintosh officially launched the Guide and web site and thanked all those responsible for producing these mighty cornerstones of the West of England Antique Dealers’ Association.

The date for the next Fair is Thursday 5th - Saturday 7th March 2009.

The Esher Hall Antiques and Fine Art Fair, which runs from Friday 18th until Sunday 20th April 2008 at Esher Hall, Sandown Park Racecourse, Esher, Surrey KT10 9AJ is the second of two new events launched by Ingrid Nilson of The Antiques Dealers Fair Limited in 2008.

Some 45 exhibitors, all reputable specialists in their fields, and predominantly members of either the British Antique Dealers’ Association or LAPADA, the UK’s largest association of professional art and antiques dealers, will be presenting a fine and varied array to inspire collectors and visitors alike. Oil and watercolour paintings, from 19th century to the contemporary, town and country furniture, clocks,
jewellery, barometers, sculpture, glass, ceramics, silver, oriental carpets, maps and prints and decorative accessories, will all be for sale with prices ranging from £250 to £250,000.

Highlights include a superb quality early George I period walnut secretaire tallboy from Witney dealers, W R Harvey & Co (in the region of £75,000) which was sent over from New York in 1941 to HM King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace to assist with the war effort. It has the original engraved metal plaque and stamped envelope which accompanied the tallboy on its return trip to England.

Further examples of fine period furniture are from local Dorking dealers,
Arkell Antiques who are bringing a Sheraton demi-lune card table c 1790, (£6,900), a Regency breakfast table, an early 19th century linen press and a lovely George IV library chair. A pretty 19th century French giltwood sofa c1880-90 (£2,695) is from Stablegate Antiques.

Fine antique barometer specialist Alan Walker is selling an outstanding ‘flame’ mahogany bow-fronted stick barometer, c 1825, made by John Dunn of Edinburgh (£12,500) and Carlton Clocks is bringing a late 19th century longcase clock with a very unusual dial by J Purser & Sons of Portsmouth (£5,950). An extremely rare William III silver tobacco box made in York c 1695 by Robert Williamson is one of the
highlights from Petworth silver dealer Nicholas Shaw Antiques.

Of local interest, Baron Fine Art is bringing a watercolour of Shere Heath by George Marks (fl 1880-1938) for £2,500 and another of Milford Heath by Harry Sutton Palmer (1854-1933), £3,400. Dorking dealer, Angelika CJ Friebe, who specialises in antiquarian maps and prints is bringing a framed map of Surrey, published by Henry Teesdale, c1830, for £250.

Angelika CJ Friebe is also selling several stunning modern coloured horse lithographs by the prolific French artist Alfred de Dreux (1810-1860), c £1,200. On his return to France from England in 1859, de Dreux was commissioned to paint the portrait of Napoleon III. Unfortunately, before this was completed, there was a row
over payment and he died in a duel with Napoleon’s aide-de-camp, Comte Fleury.

For a more modern feel, Neville Contemporary Art is bringing a series of landscapes and coastal scenes by Duncan Palmar, wildlife paintings by David Orr-Kerr and new work by Paula Vize, all priced between £500 - £10,000.
